Wash before Wear
Your new diapers need to be washed at least once before your baby wears the diaper.
Always follow the manufacturer’s instructions as stated on the label. Usually you
will wash your new diapers (pocket diapers, all in one diapers, polyurethane laminate
covers) in hot water with a very small amount of detergent (See below for detergent
recommendations) and dry in the dryer or hang to dry!
A note on natural fabrics: hemp, bamboo and unbleached cotton will need to wash
and dry at least 3-5 times to remove their natural oils and waxes (i.e. wash-dry,
then wash-dry, then wash-dry, etc.). Natural fabrics need to be washed separately
from your Pocket Diapers, All-in-One Diapers, All-in-Two Diapers, Covers and anything
that is made with Polyester. Once the initial prep is done for your natural fabrics,
you can wash everything together!
When to Change
Diapers should be changed as soon as they become soiled or wet. Two to three hours
is the recommended time a child should be left in a diaper, cloth or disposable.
During naptime and nighttime, exceptions do apply.
Recommended Detergents
Any detergent. Make sure you get original - no bleach, no scents. I recommend to
read the ingredient list carefully, as many “earth friendly” detergents contain
oils that can cause your diapers to repel!
Washing your diapers-Easy Steps to follow
- Remove the inserts or soakers.
- Run a cold wash / cold rinse cycle without detergent to rinse diapers free of solids.
- Wash on hot, rinse cold, with detergent.
- Run an extra rinse cycle to be sure your diapers are free of detergent.
- Dry inserts and diapers on high heat. Hang covers to dry or use low setting in the
dryer.
Do not use bleach or whitening agents
They will breakdown the fibers of fabrics and destroy your diaper covers. Not to
mention that they are very harsh on your baby’s skin and the environment...
Dealing with Wool
Wool requires a completely different routine and should not be washed in this manner.
Follow care instructions provided by manufacturer.
Do not use fabric softener or dryer sheets
Liquid fabric softeners and dryer sheets both leave a waxy residue which causes
fleece to repel urine and decreases the absorbency of other diapers.
Do not use diaper creams
For best results either place a small wash cloth on top of the fleece or use a liner.
